Boston Acting Mayor Kim Janey Says She Doesn’t Like The Term ‘Acting Mayor’

May 3, 2021

Kim Janey is the acting mayor of Boston, but she doesn’t like the title.

She thinks she should be called mayor, not acting mayor.

“There’s too much work to do to be doing the act. I am doing the work,” Janey told WCVB on Sunday, May 2. “That is what I’m focused on, making sure that the residents of Boston are well-served; that we are addressing the many challenges that are before us; [and] creating opportunities for residents to come together, to do this work with us.

“There is a lot at stake, but I continue to be encouraged because this is a great city,” she added. “We have come a long way. We certainly have a lot more work to do, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity to serve and to lead.”

Janey has been the city’s acting mayor since March. She was the city council president at the time that former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh resigned to take a post as the U.S. secretary of labor.
