Charlie Baker Says He Supports Suspending The Massachusetts Gas Tax

May 20, 2022

Should Massachusetts suspend its gas tax?

Governor Charlie Baker thinks it’s a good idea.

“If we were to suspend the gas tax, the cost of gas would drop by 25 cents a gallon, and that would make a huge difference for a lot of those folks,” Baker told reporters earlier this week.

While Baker likes the idea of suspending the state’s 24-cents-per-gallon gas tax, Democrats in the Massachusetts state legislature generally don’t.

In March, the Massachusetts Senate voted 11-29 against an amendment offered by Republican state Senator Ryan Fattman, of Sutton, that sought to suspend the gas tax until the price of gas dropped below $3.70 per gallon back.
