Connecticut Governor Wants NHL Franchise To Relocate To Hartford

May 21, 2023

Should the Arizona Coyotes move to Hartford, Connecticut?

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont wants to try to make it happen.

Lamont plans to meet with National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman to discuss the possibility of the Coyotes moving from Glendale, Arizona to Hartford, Connecticut.

“This is a great hockey state and a great hockey town,” Lamont told The Associated Press. “It’s evidenced by the passion we have for the Whalers going back years — still one of the best-selling jerseys. I think we can guarantee them a very strong market right here, and a government that’s ready to come and be their partner.”

The Hartford Whalers, which Lamont mentioned, were an NHL franchise from 1979 to 1997. The franchise then moved south and rebranded as the Carolina Hurricanes.
