Ed Markey Calls Abortion A Human Right

January 1, 2023

U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-Malden) is now doing fund-raising email messages for a pro-abortion organization known as Reproductive Equity Now.

The organization sent its followers an email message from Senator Markey urging them to donate to the organization on Saturday, December 31.

In it, the formerly pro-life Markey called abortion a “human right.”

“Reproductive Equity Now needs our help to overturn discriminatory, restrictive abortion bans, oust anti-abortion legislators, and keep up the critical work of expanding abortion access in New England,” Markey wrote. “Together, we will ensure that every person — no matter their race, identity, or how much money is in their bank account — can access the reproductive health care they want.”

“Because abortion is health care, and health care is a human right,” he added.

When Markey first ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, he supported an amendment to the United States Constitution outlawing abortion.

“He says his abortion position is a matter of conscience, because he thinks abortion is wrong,” a news story in The Harvard Crimson at the time reported.

Markey was one of 12 candidates in the race. Markey had the support of Massachusetts Citizens For Life.

However, when running for the U.S. Senate for the first time in 1983 and 1984 (without giving up his House seat), Markey flipped his position. His run was unsuccessful, but his switch on abortion was permanent.

“I was making a personal decision about what I felt was the right thing to do,” Markey told The Boston Globe in 2013 to explain changing his position. “I wasn’t thinking about it in any other context than I felt uncomfortable with the way I was voting.”
