Ed Markey Says Emissions From Health Care Are Making People Sicker

March 4, 2024

U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-Malden) says the American health care industry emits too much greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Markey even said that the health care system is making people sicker because of its emissions.

“Eight percent of greenhouse gas emissions come out of our health care system, meaning it’s not just a health care system, it’s a sick care system,” Markey said in a press release from his office. “It’s actually making our country sicker. It’s environmental injustice. And it is contributing to the problem that young people especially want to have cured.”

Markey supports cutting emissions through the Green New Deal — which he has repeatedly sponsored in the U.S. Senate. The bill, whichPresident Joe Biden opposes, calls for eliminating carbon emissions by 2030. However, Markey has never explained how much it would cost, how the country would pay for it, or what would be done about widespread job loss in the energy sector.
