Environmental Group Calls Ed Markey Win ‘Cinderella Story’

November 6, 2020

An environmental group that supported U.S. Senator Ed Markey’s re-election this week “the final chapter” in the 44-year member of Congress’s “Cinderella story.”

Environment Massachusetts noted in a written statement that Markey was an early underdog in his primary race against now-outgoing U.S. Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III, which Markey won September 1.

Markey, 74, was a heavy favorite in the general election, in which he defeated first-time candidate Kevin O’Connor, a Republican lawyer from Dover, by a two-to-one margin.

Wendy Wendlandt, acting president of Environment America, called Markey, who is the chief sponsor of the Green New Deal in the U.S. Senate, “a champion for environmental causes.”

Environment Massachusetts is an affiliate of Environment America, which according to the press release spent about $4 million “on broadcast, digital, and print advertisements for Markey.”
