Former Red Sox Star Xander Bogaerts Switching Positions This Season

February 19, 2024

Xander Bogaerts has a new position.

The former Boston Red Sox star shortstop will play second base for the San Diego Padres this season — a position he has never played in the big leagues, according to NESN.

Bogaerts signed an 11-year $280 million contract with the Padres before the 2023 Major League Baseball season. Before that, he was a member of the Red Sox from 2013 to 2022; he primarily played shortstop, though he spent some time at third base in 2014.

During his Red Sox tenure, Bogaerts helped the team win the World Series twice:  in 2013 and 2018. He was also a four-time All-Star with the Red Sox.
