Four Deep Sports Talk Names Its High School Basketball Players and Coaches Of The Year

March 31, 2022

Four Deep Sports Talk named its annual basketball players and coaches of the year earlier this week.

The weekly WARA AM 1320 radio show — which is also on more than 40 public access television stations — covers what the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association used to consider its south section. Its founder is Taunton resident Dominic Damiano. This is the third year the show has given out these awards.

It named Oliver Ames High (of Easton, Massachusetts) senior Caroline Peper its girls’ basketball player of the year, Boston College High School senior Mike Loughnane (Quincy, Massachusetts) its boys’ basketball player of the year, Whitman-Hanson head coach Mike Costa its girls’ basketball coach of the year, and Norwood head coach Kristen McDonnell its boys’ basketball coach of the year.

Peper helped Oliver Ames win a Division 2 state title this winter; she finished her high school career with more than 1,000 points.

Like Peper, Loughnane’s team won a state title this year (Division 1). He was also a 1,000-point scorer; he became the fourth player in B.C. High history to reach the 1,000-point total this past season.

Costa led Whitman-Hanson to the Division 2 state semifinal; and McDonnell led Norwood to the Division 2 state final where her team fell to Malden Catholic. McDonnell is one of the few known women to be a head coach of a Massachusetts high school varsity boys’ basketball team.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at Adria Restaurant and Banquet Facility in East Bridgewater.
