Geoff Diehl Endorses Summer Schmaling For State Representative

October 19, 2020

Halifax resident Summer Schmaling, who is running for state representative as a Republican in the Twelfth Plymouth District, recently received the backing of a former member of the state Legislature.

Schmaling, who is running against incumbent state Representative Kathleen LaNatra (D-Kingston), earned the backing of Geoff Diehl, a Whitman Republican who represented the Seventh Plymouth District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019. Diehl was also the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in 2018.

LaNatra was first elected in November 2018. In 2019 she got a 0 percent rating from the American Conservative Union (out of a possible 100). Out of 14 bills and amendments tracked by the organization last year, she voted against the conservative position on 13; for one vote she was absent, according to the American Conservative Union.

Schmaling is a member of the Halifax elementary school committee. She opposes Common Core — which is how she knows Diehl.

“In 2014, Massachusetts was facing drastic changes to state education standards due to overreach with Common Core, an unconstitutional attempt by the federal government to take away local control,” Diehl wrote. “I was working in the legislature to allow our state to maintain the high standards we had developed and, when meeting regionally in the South Shore with other opponents of Common Core, I met Summer. She was someone who understood the impact on her children and their schools.

“I worked closely with her to get the message out to other parents and community leaders,” Diehl continued. “Thanks to her work, there was enough pressure put on Beacon Hill to pull back from the curriculum and the PARCC testing, that even the Massachusetts Teachers Association opposed. I remain grateful for her dedication to the cause and I know she will be an even greater advocate for our families as a Representative in the Massachusetts House.”

The Twelfth Plymouth District includes the South Shore towns of Halifax, Kingston, and Plympton, as well as portions of the town of Duxbury (Precinct 1), Middleborough (Precinct 1), and Plymouth (Precincts 1, 11, and 13, which cover the northern and northwestern portions of Plymouth).

Residents of #Halifax, #Kingston, #Plympton and parts of #Plymouth & #Duxbury will be fortunate to have Summer working for them!
