John Henry Says He Won’t Sell The Boston Red Sox and That Fans Have Unrealistic Expectations
June 10, 2024
John Henry doesn’t sound like a man who is ready to sell the Boston Red Sox any time soon.
The liberal billionaire, who has owned the Red Sox since 2002, told The Financial Times in a recent interview that he has no plans to sell the team.
“My wife and I live and work in Boston,” Henry said. “We are committed to the city, the region. So the Sox are not going to come up for sale. We generally don’t sell assets.”
Henry also said that he thinks fans expect too much from the Red Sox.
“Because fans expect championships almost annually,” he said, “they easily become frustrated and are not going to buy into what the odds actually are: one in 20 or one in 30.”
The Red Sox finished in last place in the American League East in 2020, 2022, and 2023. The team’s record is currently 33-33, 12 1/2 games out of first place in the division.
