Jon Santiago Drops Out Of Race For Mayor of Boston

July 13, 2021

State Representative Jon Santiago (D-South End) dropped out of the Boston mayoral race on Tuesday morning via Twitter

The Santiago campaign lagged far behind in the polling. In a late June poll put out by The Boston Globe, Santiago was in fifth place with 5 percent support. Meanwhile, the frontrunners in the race were Boston city councilor Michelle Wu (23 percent) and acting mayor Kim Janey (22 percent).

Before he dropped out, Politico noted that his endorsement could be a boon to another campaign.

Santiago was the only member of the state legislature in the race for mayor in Boston before his announcement Tuesday, July 13. The city’s previous mayor, Marty Walsh, served as a state representative from Dorchester before he was elected mayor.
