Kindergarten Sex Education Tweet Has Leominster School Committee Member Wondering About Membership In Massachusetts Association of School Committees

September 21, 2022

A tweet suggesting possible support for teaching sex education in kindergarten has a Leominster School Committee member wondering whether his school district should continue to support the Massachusetts Association of School Committees.

“The case for starting sex ed in kindergarten” is the headline of an NPR story highlighted on the Twitter feed of the organization, which represents member school committees and offers them services.

The NPR news story, published Monday, September 12, quotes six advocates for so-called “comprehensive” sex education and no critics of it. The Massachusetts Association of School Committee posted a link to the story on Tuesday, September 13, along with a header restating the headline.

“Recently, MASC made a post on Twitter regarding comprehensive sex education in kindergarten. I’d like to  it up to having a discussion around whether we want to respond to them, or talk about our membership. … My feeling on the situation was that it was completely inappropriate, and I would like to see what other committee members would like to do,” said Greg Thomas, a member of the Leominster School Committee, during a committee meeting Tuesday, September 19.

Committee members agreed to put the matter on the agenda of a future meeting.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette first reported the story Wednesday, September 21.
