Maine Girl Wins Second Straight High School Wrestling State Championship

February 26, 2024

A girl won her second straight high school wrestling state championship in Maine this past weekend.

Maddie Ripley, a senior at Oceanside High School (Rockland, Maine), won the 113-pound weight class for Class B. The state championship meet was held in Rumford, Maine, according to Yahoo News.

Ripley beat three boys at states on her way to win the title.

Maine has two state championship tournaments:  an open tournament, where boys and girls can compete, plus a girls’ tournament. Ripley competed in the open tournament.

Ripley credited her twin brother Gavin Ripley for being instrumental in her success. The 132-pound wrestler won his third straight state title over the weekend.

“He’s definitely a big influence on me,” Maddie said of Gavin, according to Yahoo News. “He’s the guy to beat in the practice room.”
