Maine Man Convicted in 1980 Murder of 16-Year-Old Girl

February 22, 2018

A judge found Philip Scott Fournier guilty of murder in a jury-waived trial for the killing of Joyce McLain in East Millinocket, Maine.

The victim was 16 years old in August 1980 when her body was found naked except for socks and sneakers with her hands bound behind her back and a jagged wound in the back of her head.

Fournier, who was 19 at the time, initially confessed to the slaying, but police didn’t believe him.

Prosecutors don’t have physical evidence tying him to the scene, but the judge found Fournier’s confession shortly after the slaying and his knowledge of details concerning the case prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty.
