Maine May Need Second Area Code This Decade

Maine may need a new telephone area code in the near future.

Known for 207, the only area code in the state, Maine is expected to eventually run out of 207 numbers. That would force the state to use another area code — one that has not yet been revealed.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission may start exploring the potential for a new area code in the first quarter of 2027, according to WCYY.

Maine has used the 207 area code exclusively since 1947, according to the report.
