Maine Woman Killed In What Was Likely A Great White Shark Attack

July 28, 2020

A woman in Maine was killed by a shark attack on Monday.

She was swimming off the coast of Bailey Island around 3:30 p.m. when the attack happened. Two kayakers attempted to help her back to the shore but when an ambulance arrived, she was pronounced dead, as The New York Post reports.

New England shark expert James Sulikowski reportedly said that the attack was most likely a great white shark.

“Shark interactions with humans are very rare in Maine,” he said, according to The New York Post. “My guess is that the person was mistaken as a food item.”

One way to negate this risk, according to Sulikowski, is to avoid seals.

Bailey Island is one of the dozen major islands in Casco Bay. It’s about 14 miles northeast of Portland.
