Massachusetts AFL-CIO Wants To See Minimum Go Above $15 An Hour

January 10, 2023

The minimum wage in Massachusetts is $15 an hour.

The largest labor union federation in the states says that is not sufficient.

The Massachusetts AFL-CIO would like to see the wage increased above the $15 per hour mark.

“When we were fighting for this … nobody ever saw $15 an hour as a living wage, but we knew it would help people,” Chrissy Lynch, chief of staff of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, told Boston.com

“Now, $15 — it’s a great accomplishment, but so much more needs to be done,” she added. “It has not kept pace with inflation, and the lowest wage workers are still pretty desperately trying to make ends meet.”

Then-governor Charlie Baker signed the minimum wage increase and paid family leave into law back in June 2018 as part of the so-called Grand Bargain. In exchange, Baker got a permanent sales tax holiday weekend in August.

The Massachusetts AFL-CIO is a federation of more than 800 labor unions in Massachusetts that have about 400,000 members, according to its web site.
