Massachusetts GOP Chairman Urges Newton Teachers To End Strike and Get Back To Work

January 30, 2024

The Newton Teachers Association entered the eighth day of its illegal wildcat strike on Tuesday, but Massachusetts Republican Party chairman Amy Carnevale wants to see the teachers get back to work.

Carnevale said Newton teachers are playing politics with kids’ educations, which she said is wrong.

“As negotiations continue, it’s crucial to recognize the impact on students. It’s imperative for the Newton Teachers Association to negotiate while children are in school, rather than using their education as leverage,” Carnevale said in a press release from the party.

She called on the state secretary of education, Patrick Tutwiler, to get involved. He is an appointee of Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat.

“Massachusetts’s political leaders are obligated to prioritize the well-being of Newton’s students and their families. It’s wrong to put children in the crossfire of this dispute. I urge Secretary Tutwiler to take action and facilitate the return of our children to the classroom while contract negotiations continue,” Carnevale added.
