Massachusetts Homeschool Population More Than Doubled This School Year

June 2, 2021

Homeschooling was a lot more common in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during the 2020-2021 school year than it was in past years.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released its annual school enrollment figures recently — and it showed that the state’s homeschooled population more than doubled from last school year to this school year.

There are 17,127 homeschooled students by their count this school year compared to 7,802 in the 2019-2020 school year.  Now, homeschooled students are 1.8 percent of the students in the state.

Overall, the percentage of students in public schools declined from 92.1 percent to 91.2 percent from one year to the next.
