Massachusetts Launching Mobile Sports Betting This Week

March 7, 2023

Massachusetts will have more legal sports betting this week.

Although the Bay State allowed people to place in-person bets starting in late January 2023, the state did not allow people to place mobile sports bets. Those are scheduled to begin on Friday, March 10, according to Covers.com.

Seven entities expect to provide apps through which people can legally place bets online in the Commonwealth. They include Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, Betr, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and WynnBET.

The timing of the launch toward the end of this week would allow people to bet on the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 men’s basketball tournament known as March Madness, which is scheduled to begin next week.

Massachusetts allows people to bet on college sports. However, people can only bet on in-state college sports in tournament play, including March Madness. The tournament is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 14.

Supporters of legalized sports betting point to the revenue they think it will gain for the state; they also argue that people will bet illegally if not given a legal option.

Opponents of legalized sports betting say that it will result in more gambling addiction in the Commonwealth and more working-class people losing money.
