Massachusetts Saw Uptick In Abortions Last Year

October 8, 2022

Abortions increased by 2.1 percent in 2021 over the previous year, newly obtained figures show.

NewBostonPost filed a public records request with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to see how many abortions took place in the Commonwealth in 2021. While there were 16,452 abortions in the Commonwealth in 2020, that figure increased to 16,795 in 2021.

This comes after the state saw an 11.5 percent decrease in abortions from 2019 (18,593 abortions) to 2020 — which is the year the coronavirus precautions began.

As of the time this article was published in NewBostonPost on Saturday, October 8, 2022, this information had not been reported elsewhere.

It’s unclear how many abortions have taken place in the Commonwealth so far in 2022. State public health officials typically don’t provide the number of abortions for a particular year until the fall of the following year.
