Massachusetts Senate Budget To Include Provision Making Illegal Immigrants Eligible For In-State Tuition
May 11, 2023
If the Massachusetts Senate gets its way, illegal immigrants will be eligible for in-state tuition in the Commonwealth.
The state Senate’s proposed fiscal year 2024 budget has not been finalized yet, but the budget is expected to include a provision that would make this change, according to GBH News.
The proposal, which is not yet public, will likely attempt to extend eligibility to illegal immigrants who attend a Massachusetts high school for at least three years and either graduate or get a General Educational Development equivalency degree.
“We are falling behind other states, including the red states, in offering what is not only the right thing for these immigrant students but good for our atmosphere of inclusion, equity, and overall success,” Senate President Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) told GBH News.
Thus far, the Senate has not provided a cost estimate for this measure.
