Massachusetts Senate President Visiting Greece In Unannounced Trip

June 3, 2024

The president of the Massachusetts Senate is attending an “executive leadership program” in Athens, Greece this week, her office told State House News Service.

The trip of state Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland), who leads the state Senate, wasn’t announced before she went.

“Spilka’s public schedule for the week, released last Friday, did not mention the trip and said she would have ‘[n]o publicly scheduled events’,” State House News Service reported Monday, June 3.

The program, sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures, started Sunday, June 2 and ends Thursday, June 6.

Topics include philosophy, “gods and power,” democracy, and the Pnyx, a hill in Athens where Athenians gathered around 500 B.C. to hold democratic assemblies, according to an agenda provided to State House News Service.

The agenda calls for a visit to the Acropolics on Tuesday, June 4 and dinner at Dionysos Zonar’s on Thursday, June 6.
