MassGOP Calls For State To Investigate Michelle Wu Over How She Put On ‘Electeds of Color’ Christmas Party

May 10, 2024

The Massachusetts Republican Party is calling for  state officials to investigate Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for what party officials say may be campaign finance law violations stemming from a party she hosted in December 2023 for non-white elected officials from Boston.

Here is what a press release from the party said:

A public records request initiated by the Boston Herald has revealed that Mayor Michelle Wu utilized campaign funds to cover expenses for the ‘electeds of color’ holiday party which was organized by public employees and held at the city-owned Parkman House. A co-mingling of public and campaign funds in this instance appears to be a clear-cut violation of Office of Political and Campaign Finance (OCPF) regulations. According to the Mayor’s own account of the event, the Mayor instructed her official city staff, during official hours, to promote an event that utilized campaign dollars. Such actions would appear to constitute a blatant violation of campaign finance regulations, as elected officials are prohibited from leveraging public resources for campaign endeavors.

MassGOP chairman Amy Carnevale said the Wu administration’s behavior warrants an investigation.

“The public records request revealed that the Mayor’s ‘electeds of color’ event was funded through her campaign account, thereby making the event itself a campaign event,” Carnevale said in the press release. “The undisputed fact that Boston City Hall staff were actively involved in promoting this event during work hours is a clear violation OCPF rules. Taxpayers deserve to know how often members of the Mayor’s staff are working on behalf of Mayor Wu’s self-interest. The discovery begs the question of whether there are other instances of violations. The Mayor’s blatant disregard for public finance rules warrants an investigation into her actions.”

Mayor Wu’s office could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.
