Maura Healey Says State Emergency Assistance Shelter System Needs Further Reforms

March 11, 2024

Without getting into specifics, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey recently signaled support for further reforms to the state’s right-to-shelter law.

Healey said she supports reforms because, in her opinion, more migrants are coming to Massachusetts than the state can handle.

“I’m open to reforms because I want the system to better work for families,” Healey told GBH News this past weekend. “Also, we can’t handle the numbers we’re seeing in terms of the new arrivals, so we need to put some guardrails. We need to put some parameters around that.”

Healey did not say what specific reforms she supports.

To date, Healey has not expressed support for a residency requirement to prevent non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, from using the state’s emergency shelter system for families and pregnant women, something some Republicans in Massachusetts have proposed.
