Memorial To Be Placed In Wellfleet For Shark Attack Victim

September 1, 2020

A bench memorializing a 26-year-old Brazilian man killed by a great white shark while boogie boarding off Wellfleet is scheduled to be dedicated on Tuesday, September 15, the second anniversary of the attack.

Arthur Medici died September 15, 2018 off Newcomb Hollow Beach, which is on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Outer Cape town.

Cape Cod Ocean Community spearheaded the memorial. The group originally wanted to raise money to install technological features to give swimmers early warning of a shark, but the town’s selectmen decided not to pursue it.

The bench includes a plaque with Medici’s name, a brief description of what happened, and what The Cape Cod Times called “a favorite saying about eternal life.”

The story doesn’t say what the saying is, though an organizer is quoted as describing it as a “verse.”
