Michelle Wu To Run For Mayor of Boston Next Year — Says Marty Walsh

September 8, 2020

If Boston Mayor Marty Walsh decides to seek re-election next year, he going to have a Democratic challenge — from his left.

Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu will also be running for mayor in 2021 — or at least that’s what Walsh has said, according to MassLive. The mayor said Wu called him to let him know that she plans to run against him, but Wu has not confirmed or denied that she is runnng.

Wu supports making the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority completely tax-payer funded and not charging riders. Additionally, she supports defunding the police and putting the money towards other programs.

Walsh, the current mayor, does not support making the MBTA free. He has also resisted defunding police.

Mayoral races in Boston are officially nonpartisan, so the top two vote getters in the preliminary round advance to the general election. Walsh won his second and current term in 2017 in the general election against Tito Jackson, then a city councilor.
