New England Republican Governors Don’t Sign On With Most Republican Governors Who Support Amy Coney Barrett

October 13, 2020

There are 28 Republican governors in the United States, and 24 of them publicly support confirming justice Amy Coney Barrett for the U.S. Supreme Court. The other four are from the Northeast.

While 24 signed onto a letter voicing their support, Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, Phil Scott of Vermont, and Larry Hogan of Maryland haven’t. Of those four, three are vocal critics of President Donald Trump, while Sununu is a supporter.

“As elected leaders of our states, we support a judicial philosophy like Judge Barrett’s that respects the roles of coequal branches of government and protects powers reserved to the states. Most importantly, Americans can trust Judge Barrett, because she will apply the text of the Constitution and statutes as written,” the letter states in part, according to CBS Boston. “We urge the Senate to fulfill its constitutional advice and consent duty and confirm Judge Barrett’s appointment to the Supreme Court.”
