New Hampshire Council of Churches Condemns Libertarian Group’s List of ‘Woke’ Churches

August 27, 2022

The New Hampshire Council of Churches has condemned a listing of so-called “woke” churches put out by a libertarian group in the state.

All New Hampshire Christian churches and schools are on the list with a section showing whether they exhibit “wokeness,” and if so, what kinds.

Among the kinds of wokeness identified by the libertarian group LibertyWin.org:

  • Land acknowledgment of American Indians
  • Allows same-sex marriage
  • Pride flags on the property
  • Donations to the NAACP
  • Commitments to “racial justice”
  • Has a “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” page on its web site
  • Celebrated “Disability Pride Month”
  • Black Lives Matter signs
  • Pushed mask wearing
  • Has a “Social Justice Fund”

The executive director of the New Hampshire Council of Churches, Reverend Heidi Carrington Heath, released a statement criticizing the woke list. Her statement, titled “Hate Has No Home Here,” says that the council “notified judicatory leaders here in New Hampshire, and has been in conversation with others through the weekend.”

The word “judicatory” is a noun that means “a system of courts of law.”

“NHCC explicitly condemns the use of ‘woke’ in this case a racist dog whistle designed to incite white supremacist behavior, and activity,” Heath’s statement says. “The language of racism, and anti-Blackness is not of God, and against the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our LGBTQ+ siblings are created in God’s image, and wholly loved. It is crucial we say loudly, clearly, and with one voice that hate has no home here in New Hampshire.”
