No Ranked-Choice Voting In Amherst This November

July 28, 2021

Will the town of Amherst use ranked-choice voting in its November election?

No. While members of the town council support the idea, it’s not on their agenda for this year.

“There is no new legislation as of July 1st, the date established, so there is no plan to implement ranked-choice voting for the November election,” Amherst Town Manager Paul Bockelman told MassLive this week.

Ranked-choice voting failed when it was on the November 2020 statewide general election ballot in Massachusetts, but 73 percent of voters in Amherst supported it, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office. Meanwhile, 45 percent of Bay Staters statewide voted for it while about 55 percent opposed.
