Red Sox Reliever Earns Second Rare Three-Inning Save This Season

April 9, 2024

Boston Red Sox long reliever Chase Anderson pulled off a rare feat for the second time this season on Sunday.

Anderson pitched the final three innings of the team’s 12-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels, allowing two runs.

Thanks to this performance, Anderson earned the save — a rare three-inning save.

However, it was the second time Anderson picked up a three-inning save this season.

Anderson also got the save when he pitched the final three innings of the team’s 9-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on April 1.

In baseball, there are three different ways to get a save, according to MLB.com. Here are those possible ways:

A relief pitcher recording a save must preserve his team’s lead while doing one of the following:  Enter the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitch at least one inning. Enter the game with the tying run in the on-deck circle, at the plate, or on the bases. Pitch at least three innings.

In the modern era saves are typically earned by the first two methods as relievers tend not to pitch more than one or two innings.
