Republican Peter Durant To Join Massachusetts Senate This Month

November 17, 2023

Massachusetts state Representative Peter Durant (R-Spencer) plans to start his new job this month.

He is set to join the state Senate to represent the Worcester and Hampshire District on Wednesday, November 29, according to MassLive.

This comes after he beat state Representative Jon Zlotnik (D-Worcester) 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent in a special election on Tuesday, November 7.

The seat has been vacant since then-state Senator Anne Gobi (D-Spencer) left in June to become the state government’s new rural affairs director in Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s administration.

The Worcester and Hampshire District, which Gobi represented, includes Gardner, Worcester (Ward 7, Precincts 2, 4, 5, 6; Ward 9, Precincts 3 and 4), Barre, Brookfield, East Brookfield, Hardwick, Holden, Hubbardston, Leicester, New Braintree, North Brookfield, Oakham, Paxton, Phillipston, Princeton, Rutland, Spencer, Sterling, Templeton, West Brookfield, Westminster, and Ware.

Democrats currently outnumber Republicans in the Massachusetts Senate by 36 to 3. Durant would be the fourth Republican in the chamber.
