Rhode Island Dispensaries Now Selling Recreational Marijuana

December 1, 2022

Recreational marijuana is now legal to buy at dispensaries in Rhode Island.

Dispensaries began selling the drug for recreational purposes in Rhode Island on Thursday, December 1, according to WJAR.

The state’s governor, Dan McKee, a Democrat, signed the Rhode Island Cannabis Act (H7593) into law on May 25.

Recreational marijuana is legal in 21 of the 50 states, plus Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Washington D.C..

Massachusetts legalized recreational marijuana with a statewide ballot question in 2016; 54 percent voted to legalize marijuana, while 46 percent opposed the measure.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in five of the six New England states:  Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine. Marijuana is legal for medical purposes in New Hampshire, and it’s decriminalized for personal use.
