Rhode Island Governor Voices Support For Afghan Refugees

September 17, 2021

Rhode Island will receive about 150 Afghan refugees from the first round of resettlements — and Governor Dan McKee, a Democrat, supports the decision.

“We should embrace that. People who have helped our country in Afghanistan, we should make sure that we support them in their arrival to the United States,” McKee said, according to WJAR.

While there is no public timeframe for when these people may arrive. President Joe Biden’s administration has been reaching out to state officials and governors this week with further details on the administration’s plans.

Massachusetts will take in about 900 refugees to start, six times more than Rhode Island, which reflects the relative population sizes of the two states.
