Rhode Island Swears In New Governor

March 4, 2021

Rhode Island has a new governor.

The United States Senate confirmed former Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo for her role as the U.S. Commerce Secretary under President Joe Biden 84-15, so she resigned her office as governor of the state to take that role. Her replacement is Democrat Dan McKee, who had served as the state’s lieutenant governor since 2015. McKee is set to serve out the final 22 months of Raimondo’s term.

“I will work hard, day in and day out, on behalf of Rhode Islanders in all 39 cities and towns to ensure we come out of this pandemic stronger than we went in,” McKee said in a recent press conference, according to U.S. News and World Report.

McKee has been critical of Raimondo’s handling of the coronavirus emergency in recent weeks.
