Small Private Vermont College Shutting Down

April 10, 2024

A private college in Vermont will be shutting its doors at the end of the school year.

Goddard College’s board of trustees announced on Tuesday, April 9 that the school will close its doors due to financial problems. The board members voted unanimously to close.

“The closure of Goddard College is a significant loss for students in search of an alternative, progressive higher education,” said Mark Jones, chairman of the school’s board of trustees, according to a press release from the school. “The decision to close Goddard College was not made easily or quickly. With declining enrollment and financial insolvency looming, the Board was left with no other option. Our hearts are broken.”

Goddard is a small private college in Plainfield, Vermont, that has an enrollment of 146 students, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The school originally opened in 1938.
