Summer Schmaling Hints At Another State Representative Run

December 17, 2020

Could Summer Schmaling run for state representative in the 12th Plymouth district again?

She hinted in a Facebook post that it’s possible.

She posted a picture of her campaign signs and wrote, “As badly as I wanted to burn and throw everything away …. you never know.”

Schmaling, a Halifax Republican, ran against state Representative Kathy LaNatra (D-Kingston) in the November 2020 general election and received 45.2 percent of the vote to LaNatra’s 54.7 percent.

Schmaling’s race was the most competitive out of any non-incumbent Republican running this year.

It was her second run for state representative. She narrowly lost a GOP primary to Joseph Truschelli in 2018, receiving 49.2 percent of the vote to his 50.6 percent. Truschelli went on to lose the general election to LaNatra 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent.

As of the end of November, Schmaling had $4,254.68 in her campaign account, according to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

The 12th Plymouth district includes Halifax; Kingston; Plympton; precincts 1, 11, and 13 in Plymouth; precinct 1 in Duxbury; and precinct 1 in Middleborough. However, it is unclear what the district will look like in 2022 following the release of the 2020 U.S. Census.
