Sunrise Western Mass Coalition Retracts Alex Morse Endorsement

August 11, 2020

Sunrise Western Mass Coalition had endorsed Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse in his bid to unseat U.S. Representative Richard Neal in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’s First Congressional District this September because of Morse’s left-wing views, but now that’s no longer the case.

The 31-year-old Morse has been subjected to controversy regarding sexual relations he had with college students as young as 18 years old, including some at UMass Amherst where he taught.

As a result, the Sunrise Western Mass Coalition retracted its endorsement because of what the group called his “improper and harmful conduct.”

“We believe the students that came forward about the inappropriate nature of Alex’s actions — as we believe all survivors. There is no justice without survivor justice,” the group said in a written statement posted on its Facebook page.

“We made this decision as a group of young people who are part of a movement for a more just and livable future,” the statement says. “Our coalition consists of high schoolers, college students, and young workers in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties, including folks who worked actively on Alex’s campaign and folks with their own experiences of sexual harassment.”
