Tim Wakefield Battling Brain Cancer

September 29, 2023

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield has brain cancer and his wife Stacey has pancreatic cancer.

Wakefield’s former teammate Curt Schilling broke the news on a podcast without the Wakefield family’s consent this week, prompting the Boston Red Sox to release a statement on the matter.

“Unfortunately, this information has been shared publicly without their permission,” the team said in a written statement. “Their health is a deeply personal matter they intended to keep private as they navigate treatment and work to tackle this disease. Tim and Stacy are appreciative of the support and love that has always been extended to them and respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”

Wakefield, 57, who helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and 2007, was one of a handful of successful knuckleballers in Major League Baseball history.
