United Nations Should Investigate Trump Administration Over Illegal Immigration, Ayanna Pressley Says

October 24, 2020

Massachusetts U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley is calling for an investigation of President Donald Trump’s administration by the United Nations because of its treatment of illegal immigrants.

Using Twitter handles to denote government entities, Pressley called out the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and called for two governmental entities outside of the United States to investigate.

Homeland Security “under Donald Trump has demonstrated time and again its utter disregard for the lives of our immigrant neighbors,” Pressley (D-Dorchester) said in a tweet Friday, October 23. “It is time for the [United Nations] and the [Inter-American Commission on Human Rights] to conduct an external and independent investigation.”

Pressley notes in the tweet that her fellow members of “The Squad” – four left-wing first-term women of color in the U.S. House of Representatives – are also issuing the demand. They are Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

“Proud to join my sisters in service in leading this call,” Pressley said in the tweet.

If conducted, it would be the first ever investigation of the U.S. government within the United States by a foreign entity.
