Vermont Legalizes Recreational Marijuana — Governor Says It’s About Racial Justice

Recreational marijuana will be legal for the adult population in Vermont.

The Democratic supermajority in the state legislature passed bills to legalize marijuana in the state last week, and the state’s Republican governor Phil Scott says he will allow it to pass without his signature.

Scott said that legalizing marijuana is a racial justice issue.

“I believe we are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history which requires us to address systemic racism in our governmental institutions,” Scott said, according to MSN. “We must take additional steps to ensure equity is a foundational principle in a new market.”

The state have a 14 percent tax on marijuana. The tax on marijuana in Massachusetts is effectively 20 percent.
