Maura Healey Torched After Criticizing Trump Tariffs

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey took some serious heat online on Wednesday after blasting President Donald Trump over tariffs..Healey criticized Trump for slapping reciprocal tariffs on about 90 countries, plus a standard 10 percent tariff on all goods imported to the United States."Donald Trump’s not liberating you from high costs — he’s using your money to fund a reckless trade war," Healey posted on X (Twitter) on Wednesday, April 2.Her post added that Trump's tariffs liberate people from "your hard-earned money."Healey got ratioed for her post -- something that happens when a post gets far more comments than it gets likes and the replies have many more likes than the original post.As of Thursday morning, Healey's post had garnered 89 likes and well more than 400 replies torching, mostly criticizing her.Jessica Machado, a right-leaning independent journalist, told Healey that she's the one raising costs for Bay State families."I'm not sure who is advising you but an anti-trump platform isn't going to be the best path to re-election," Machado wrote in a post with more than 800 likes. "Is anyone from your team actually talking to taxpayers? Join a town Facebook group lately? All people care about is the ability to afford their lives. You can't blame Trump for that after you spent 2.2 billion on the migrants he is deporting."The Massachusetts Republican Party also slammed Healey's take, expressing a similar sentiment in a post that got more than 200 likes."What Healey aims to achieve as Governor: -Higher taxes -Paying more for prescription drugs -More and higher excise taxes -Billions spent on migrant hotels -RIDICULOUSLY HIGH ENERGY BILLS -Gaslighting Massachusetts is in the state we're in because the Gov and the gov alone," the party's post said.Meanwhile, right-wing YouTuber John Gately's post with more than 200 likes read, "You're using our money to fund an invasion of our own country."Additionally, a post from a right-wing account called Progressive New England with more than 200 likes stated, "At least you’re liberating Massachusetts from affordability."Plus, a user named Thoughts And Ideas had a reply with more than 100 likes that said, "MA was ranked most expensive place to raise a family. That has nothing to do with Donald Trump. You are moronic."Also, user Kenny Rogers Paulino's reply with more than 100 likes said, "I wouldn’t let @POTUS take the credit for high heat and electric bills. @MassGovernor that’s all you ma’am."As NewBostonPost reported earlier this year, Healey's criticism of tariffs comes as she has proposed about $491 million in tax increases.Healey's proposed $61.5 billion fiscal year 2026 budget includes the following tax increase proposals, as NewBostonPost previously reported:Subjecting candy to the state's 6.25 percent sales tax ($25 million)Subjecting synthetic nicotine products -- including ZYN and VELO pouches -- to the state's 210 percent excise tax for smokeless tobacco products ($2 million)The Municipal Empowerment Act, which would allow towns to raise their local option lodging tax from 6 percent to 7 percent (6.5 percent to 7.5 percent in Boston), increase the maximum local option meals tax from 0.75 percent to one percent, and establish a new 5 percent local option motor vehicle excise surcharge based on a vehicle’s value ($155 million)Capping the state's charitable state income tax deduction at $5,000 for individuals ($10,000 for joint couples) ($164 million)Creating a “pharmacy assessment” on all prescription drugs sold in the Commonwealth that would charge pharmacies $2 per prescription or 6 percent of what the prescription costs, whichever is less ($145 million)Healey's office could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday.
