New Area Code Could Be Coming To Maine

In the state of Maine, there could soon be a new area code.

Earlier this month, Maine’s Public Utilities Commission began to investigate the number of unused 207 area code numbers to see if they need another one. It found that the area code is “exhausted,” according to Bangor Daily News.

That means that commission members feel as though there needs to be a new area code to meet demand for their constituents. This is the case despite only 37 percent of 207 area code numbers being in current use.

The state is expected to come up with a formal decision on the situation next month.
