Open Communist Got 5 Percent of the Vote In South Shore State Representative Race

November 27, 2020

What percentage of the population would vote for an open communist?

The answer is at least 5 percent in the Fourth Norfolk District south of Boston.

Massachusetts state Representative James Murphy (D-Weymouth) easily won re-election in the district with 64.7 percent of the vote, but Dominic Giannone III finished third with 5.0 percent of the vote.

Giannone ran under the designation Workers Party. In 2013, he told Patriot Ledger that he considers himself to be a member of The Communist Party USA.

“My communist ideas shape who I am and what I believe. The shorthand I like to use is democratizing the economy to meet the needs of working people,” Giannone told The Patriot Ledger in 2013.

The Fourth Norfolk District covers most of the city of Weymouth (Precincts 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 18) and one precinct in the town of Hingham (Precinct 2).
