Sonia Chang-Diaz Drops Out Of Massachusetts Governor’s Race

June 23, 2022

State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz (D-Jamaica Plain) is no longer running to be the next governor of Massachusetts.

The progressive Democrat dropped out of the race at a press conference in Boston on Thursday morning, June 23.

“I have looked at the numbers every which way,” Chang-Diaz said at the press conference. “Unfortunately, there is no path I can responsibly lead my supporters on that results in me becoming governor this year.”

Although she dropped out, Chang-Diaz’s name will appear on the September 2022 Democratic primary ballot. She will be on the ballot with Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey.

Chang-Diaz’s announcement all but assured Healey the Democratic nomination. She was already the frontrunner both in the primary and in the November 2022 general election.

There are also two Republicans running for governor:  former state representative Geoff Diehl (R-Whitman) and Wrentham businessman Chris Doughty.
