Over 200 of Boston’s homeless gathered for a cookout on Jim Rice field in Roxbury on Friday. With the help of the Boston Homeless Solidarity Committee, Lenny Higginbottom’s dream became reality as homeless men, women, and children kicked off July fourth weekend with a picnic, raffles, games, and a chance to share their stories in a public forum.

A highlight of the day was the wedding of Kim and Eric, performed by Pastor Laura of the Common Cathedral, which meets Sunday at noon on the Boston Common at the Park Street Station Corner. This event marked an important turning point for Boston’s homeless, many of whom were displaced by the abrupt closing of the Long Island Bridge last October.

The bride walked down a makeshift aisle as her audience sang, “Amazing Grace”.
