Amid Second Recall Election in Four Years, Some in Fall River Call for Getting Rid of Mayor’s Position

A task force appointed by the city council of Fall River plans to study whether it might make sense to get rid of the mayor’s position in city government and replace it with a city manager answerable to the city council, according to the Fall River Herald News.

Mayor Jasiel Correia II, 27, under indictment and the subject of a recall election in March, is the third mayor in a row in Fall River to run into trouble with the voters. One mayor was recalled in December 2014, and then his successor lost in November 2016 to the current mayor, who will be out in a couple of months if loses the recall election set for March 12.

Fall River, a Massachusetts city of about 87,000 people about 53 miles south of Boston (and on the Rhode Island border), has had 44 mayors since it was incorporated as a city in 1854.
