Boston Globe Union Planning Walkout Tuesday, August 6

A union that represents about 300 reporters, editors, and photographers as well as business-side employees of The Boston Globe is planning to walk out of the newsroom at noon Tuesday to protest what the union considers unsatisfactory contract negotiations.

Union members have been working under the terms of a contract that expired seven months ago.

A union official from the Boston Newspaper Guild said management is refusing to make pay increases retroactive to the expiration of the old contract and is even refusing to extend the time that employees can continue to use vacation days, according to The Boston Business Journal.

The walkout, which is not billed as a strike, is scheduled to begin in the lobby of the Globe’s new headquarters at 53 State Street in Boston and continue onto the street.

The Boston Globe is owned by John Henry, who is also the owner of the Boston Red Sox.
