Roll Call on Gas Tax Bill in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in March 2020

February 15, 2021

The Massachusetts House of Representatives voted in favor of a bill that sought to increase the state’s gasoline tax and tax ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. The vote was 113 Yea, 40 Nay, 4 Not Voting.

All Yea votes came from Democrats. All Republicans voted Nay, as did eight Democrats and one unenrolled member (which means not a member of a political party).  Four Democrats did not vote.

The vote occurred a couple of weeks before the coronavirus emergency hit Massachusetts.  The Massachusetts Senate did not take up the bill during the 2019-2020 legislative session.

There were three vacancies in the Massachusetts House at the time of the vote. (The House ordinarily has 160 members.)

Vacant House seats as of March 4, 2020:  Thirty-Second Middlesex District (which includes the city of Melrose; portions of the town of Wakefield (precincts 4 through 6); and portions of the city of Malden (Ward 5, Precinct 2)); Thirty-Seventh Middlesex District (which includes the towns of Boxborough, Harvard, and Shirley; and portions of the town of Acton (precincts 3 through 5), portions of the town of Ayer (precinct 2); and portions of the town of Lunenburg (precincts A, C, and D); Third Bristol District (which includes portions of the city of Taunton (Wards 1, 2, 5, 7, 8; and portions of Ward 3 (precinct A)); and portions of the town of Easton (precinct 6)).

Below is a roll call on Massachusetts House Bill 4530 of the 2019-2020 legislative session.

A Yes vote in red is for the gas tax bill.  A No vote in blue is against the gas tax bill.  “Present” means the state representative registered his presence but did not vote either Yes or No. “Not Voting” (in pea green) means the member did not vote on the bill.
