Boston Mayoral Candidate Andrea Campbell Wants To Cut Police Budget

August 6, 2021

Boston city councilor and mayoral candidate Andrea Campbell wants to defund the police — at least in part.

She recently told GBH News that she would support reducing the Boston Police Department’s budget by $50 million — a 12.5 percent decrease from this year’s budget.

“I would invest that in mental health supports addressing trauma, moving people out of poverty, investing in our education,” Campbell told GBH News, “and, of course, other community-based organizations that have been doing the work to solve and intervene and prevent violence in the first place.”

Campbell said that she would eliminate the four-hour overtime minimum in police union contracts and use civilian flaggers instead of cops on details to save money on policing.
